From crab boats to CRE: CoStar profiles Stuart Oswald's career journey

Before he was helping borrowers navigate turbulent capital markets, Stuart Oswald was weathering the rough waters of Alaska aboard crab boats and salmon vessels.
Hauling seine nets and steel crab pots bears little resemblance to commercial real estate finance, yet both demand a tolerance for risk, a steady hand under pressure and the ability to adapt when conditions change without warning.
Months spent working in the harsh North Pacific taught Oswald lessons in preparation, teamwork and situational awareness that would later prove invaluable through some of commercial real estate's most volatile market cycles.
Today, Oswald is a managing director with Northmarq, helping oversee the firm's debt and equity operation in the Seattle area and building on a lending career that began in 1996.
Over the past 30 years, he has arranged more than $3.5 billion in loans across property types, with a focus on multifamily, affordable housing and senior housing across the Northwest.
