NorthMarq’s Loan Portfolio Manager Jeff Davis, as a person who is 6’5” tall, literally towers over NorthMarq’s other Servicing employees. In Jeff’s case, height is an apt metaphor for the role Jeff plays in NorthMarq’s Servicing operation as a tower of strength.
It all began for Jeff on a dairy farm in Milbank, South Dakota, a town of about 3,500 people. As the second of three boys in his family, Jeff drew his fair share of the “early morning” responsibilities at 2:00 a.m. in the summers and on the weekends during high school. He definitely preferred working with his grandfather driving tractors in the fields. When he reached college age, Jeff pursued a college education at nearby South Dakota State University.
As a college student, Jeff played NCAA Division I (FCS) football. Jeff was an offensive lineman and—demonstrating versatility on behalf of the team—played four different line positions during his college career. His best moment as a college football player? Characteristically, Jeff modestly deflects the question: “It teaches you a lot, having to balance the skills of being a student and a student athlete.”
After college Jeff moved to San Diego for several years to live with friends and be with his girlfriend, who worked there as a nurse. When they married, they relocated to the Twin Cities to be close to family, and Jeff completed an MBA program at the University of Minnesota. In 2008, Jeff walked into NorthMarq’s headquarters with a resume in hand—without an appointment—and asked to speak to someone in Human Resources. Thus began a professional relationship made in heaven for Jeff and for NorthMarq.
Jeff’s supervisor, NorthMarq Manager Jason Lenz, picks up the story: “Twice I’ve been through short-staffed teams. Jeff is the guy you can count on when you need it the most. He steps up to all challenges given to him and will go above and beyond expectations. Jeff is the anchor of our staff.” When asked to identify qualities of Jeff that set him apart, Jason does not hesitate: “Jeff is probably better at interpreting loan documents than anyone I know.” And some adjectives that describe Jeff? “Leader, persuasive, smart, detailed, hard worker, and (the ultimate praise for someone working with Agency loans) a ‘walking Freddie Mac Guide.’” Anything else? “Jeff’s team is very loyal to him, and he has built an extremely strong analyst team over the past three years.”
NorthMarq analysts who have worked with and under Jeff join in the groundswell of praise: “always there to help”; “door is always open”; “he trained me in—without Jeff, I wouldn’t have learned half of the information”; “Jeff is an advocate. He always has our back, and, if we are wrong, he will gently tell us.”
Away from work, Jeff is first and foremost a family man, raising with his wife Dianna their three children, ages 6, 3, and 1. Favorite family pursuits include camping with the kids and grandparents and spending time on the lake. Then there are the home improvement projects—fences, decks, play center for the kids—for which Jeff was prepped by his farm upbringing. In those remarkably rare moments when work of all kinds is done and the kids are asleep? You will find Jeff playing the piano he inherited from his great-grandmother, a skill Jeff honed with 10 years of lessons as a child.
A man of many skills and a master of many—Jeff Davis, NorthMarq’s tower of strength!
